06.03.08 Trane Launches ‘Cloud House’ Advertising Campaign

A new advertising campaign from Residential Systems touts the benefits homeowners can enjoy from Trane HVAC systems throughout the year. Trane high-performance systems can make homes cleaner and healthier – while helping them save on energy costs. Dubbed “The Cloud House” campaign, it launched its first 15- and 30-second television spots in early April. Other components, including print ads, direct mail, radio spots, online banners and billboards, will roll out over the next few weeks.

Creating Consumer Demand…for Trane Air

The television spots focus on a house, set in a typical affluent suburban neighborhood, that’s filled with fair-weather clouds in a blue sky. As the camera zooms out, revealing the house and its surroundings, family members and neighbors go about their lives and we experience each of the seasons. Off-screen, an announcer delivers the message: “The elements outside are beyond your control. But day in and day out, a Trane system heats, cools and cleans the air inside your home … perfectly. No matter what Mother Nature may throw at you.”

Behind the Cloud House Campaign

The new campaign was developed by our New York-based advertising agency, DraftFCB, in collaboration with Trane’s internal brand marketing team.

At its heart, the campaign hopes to make consumers think about air and its fundamental relevance to everyday living. It’s a strategy to help make the invisible more visible, and Joyce Warrington, Trane brand director, is betting the campaign will resonate with consumers. “The quality of indoor air is so relevant to your health and well-being, but you almost never think about it until something happens to go awry in your home—and then it becomes high level and very visible rather quickly,” she said.

“The ‘Cloud House’ campaign is all about the ultimate benefits we offer the consumer— more comfort; healthy, clean air and—with energy costs skyrocketing—greater energy efficiency,” said Warrington. “This campaign leaves you with the idea that inside your home, you’ve got this perfect environment with a Trane system, no matter what the elements are outside”.

The campaign’s central theme is “Heating. Cooling. And Beyond,” which Warrington said reflects the concept that Trane HVAC high performance systems go far beyond just heating and cooling a home. Warrington believes the theme will have longevity as RS branches out to new products and services. “The ‘And Beyond’ has so much potential as we go forward,” she said. “It could mean products that enhance the ideal home environment offering, and it could really stem in a lot of different directions that are beyond product, which could definitely differentiate Trane as a true leader in the industry.”

The campaign also was created with input from key Trane dealers. Trane dealers felt that even though clean air is important in differentiating Trane as a leader in the HVAC industry, Trane should also reinforce its fundamental entrance in the category of promoting hot and cold air – specifically Trane air.

The first “Cloud House” television spots began airing this month on national cable as well as local network stations serving Trane’s key residential markets in North America. National consumer magazines will hit the newsstands this month; online advertising and initiatives targeting healthcare influencers will also launch in April. Warrington said she is even in talks with a few distributors who are interested in erecting die-cut, house-shaped billboards promoting the “Cloud House” theme.

01.25.08 Did you know? - Air Quality

Did you know that the air in your home is likely more polluted than the air outside? That’s a troubling fact considering how much indoor air pollutants can affect the health of your family.
Here is some useful information about indoor air:

• The EPA ranks indoor air pollution among the top five environmental risks to public health.
• EPA studies indicate that indoor levels of many pollutants may be 25 times, and occasionally more than 100 times, higher than outdoor levels. In general, indoor air is four to five times more polluted than outdoor air.
• More than 15 million Americans are estimated to have asthma, including one-in-13 school-age children.
• In the last 30 years, the number of people with asthma has gone up by almost 60%.
• 87% of American homeowners are not aware that pollution may be worse inside their homes than outdoors.
• The World Health Organization estimates that approximately 30% of newly constructed and remodeled facilities have indoor air quality problems.
• Because they breathe faster than adults, children inhale 50% more air per pound of body weight than adults and are especially sensitive to air quality problems.
• Over 28 million Americans suffer from hay fever and other allergies.
• According to a study by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, indoor air contaminants are responsible for half of all illnesses.
• Tobacco smoke actually contains over 4,000 compounds, many of which are strong irritants.
• Many ordinary activities such as cooking, cleaning and redecorating can spread indoor pollutants.
• Most homes generate about 40 pounds of dust per year for every 1,500 square feet of space.
• About 40,000 dust mites, a common cause of household allergies, can be found in only one ounce of dust.
• Even a spotless home can allow indoor pollutants to flourish. Bathrooms, damp basements, and even carpets and furniture are often the prime cause.
• Flowers are a source of pollen, but trees are the main culprits for allergy sufferers. Many trees, such as birch, alder and pine trees, rely on the wind instead of insects to distribute their pollen.
• Exposure to indoor air pollutants has increased due to a variety of factors, including the increased use of synthetic building materials and furnishings, chemically formulated personal care products, and household cleaners.
• Most homes built after 1979 have tighter insulation wraps that trap smoke, odors and other irritants indoors.
• It is suggested we drink approximately two quarts of clean water each day. By comparison, we inhale approximately 15,000 quarts of air each day.
• New TRANE CleanEffects™ is the industry’s most effective whole house air filtration system, capable of removing up to 99.98% of particles and allergens from the filtered air.
• Keep pets away from home furnishings like beds and couches that can collect their dander.
• Wash bed linens regularly to inhibit dust mites.
• A relative humidity of 30-50% is recommended for optimal home comfort and controlling growth of biological irritants like mildew.
• Keep the air at below 50% relative humidity to kill dust mites, one of the most common household allergens.
